There are many factors to consider when remodeling your home, from budget and design to chosen materials and paint colors. But are you forgetting one the most important factors of all?
If you plan to enjoy your new dream home for as long as possible – you need to consider how the space will serve you in later years. Because as our capabilities change with age, so do our living requirements. Fortunately, the National Association of Home Builders (NAHB) provides a comprehensive remodeling checklist to ensure your design will accommodate every stage of life. Here are 3 must-have highlights:
1. Relegate main living to the first floor
Plan a master bedroom and full bath on the first floor, with even flooring throughout. Eliminating the need for stairs will ensure you don’t lose accessibility in your home with age.
2. Add space to hallways, rooms and entryways
Design wide hallways and entryways that can accommodate wheelchairs if the need arises in future. NAHB advises a minimum width of 36 inches. The organization also recommends planning a 5-foot by 5-foot “turn space” in each of your main-living rooms – including bath and kitchen.
3. Invest in smart appliances and fixtures
Touch-sensitive and remote home appliances are on the rise. Incorporate smart tech into your remodel, alongside easy-to-use fixtures such as-pull drawers and lever faucets, to add modern convenience to your home that can be enjoyed at any walk of life.
